Route Overview

Conquer Kilimanjaro’s Most Scenic and Popular Route

The Machame Route, also known as the “Whiskey Route,” is one of Kilimanjaro’s most popular trails due to its stunning scenery and high success rate. The route offers breathtaking views of the mountain’s diverse landscapes, from lush rainforests to barren alpine deserts, and provides excellent acclimatization opportunities.

Full Itinerary

After breakfast, you’ll drive to the Machame Gate (1,640 meters), where you’ll complete registration and begin your ascent. The trail winds through lush rainforest, and you may spot Colobus monkeys and other wildlife. After several hours of trekking, you'll arrive at Machame Camp for your first night on the mountain.

  • Elevation: 1,640m to 2,850m (5,380ft to 9,350ft)
  • Distance: 11km (7 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
  • Habitat: Rainforest

Meals: Lunch & Dinner included

You’ll ascend out of the rainforest and into the moorland zone, where the vegetation becomes sparser, but the views open up. You'll have stunning vistas of Mount Meru and the Shira Plateau. The hike is shorter but steeper, and you'll arrive at Shira Camp in the afternoon.

  • Elevation: 2,850m to 3,750m (9,350ft to 12,300ft)
  • Distance: 5km (3 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 4-6 hours
  • Habitat: Moorland

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included

This is a critical acclimatization day. You’ll trek up to the Lava Tower at 4,600 meters (15,100 feet) for lunch before descending to Barranco Camp. Although you end the day at a slightly higher elevation than the previous night, this climb high-sleep low strategy helps your body adjust to the altitude.

  • Elevation: 3,750m to 4,600m to 3,900m (12,300ft to 15,100ft to 12,800ft)
  • Distance: 10km (6 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
  • Habitat: Semi-desert

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included

You’ll start the day by tackling the famous Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical climb. After conquering the Wall, you’ll trek through the Karanga Valley, where you'll have great views of Kibo Peak. You’ll reach Karanga Camp in the early afternoon, where you'll have time to rest and acclimatize.

  • Elevation: 3,900m to 4,035m (12,800ft to 13,100ft)
  • Distance: 5km (3 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
  • Habitat: Alpine desert

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included

The trail to Barafu Camp is short but steep, with little vegetation. Barafu Camp serves as your base camp, and you’ll have an early dinner and go to bed to rest before your final push to the summit.

  • Elevation: 4,035m to 4,640m (13,100ft to 15,200ft)
  • Distance: 4km (2 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
  • Habitat: Alpine desert

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included

Your summit day begins at midnight. You’ll ascend slowly in the dark to Stella Point at the crater rim (5,739 meters), and from there, you’ll trek to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters), the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the summit, you’ll begin your descent back to Barafu Camp for a short rest, then continue to Mweka Camp.

  • Elevation: 4,640m to 5,895m (15,200ft to 19,341ft), then 5,895m to 3,100m (19,341ft to 10,170ft)
  • Distance: 5km (3 miles) ascent, 12km (7 miles) descent
  • Hiking Time: 10-15 hours
  • Habitat: Arctic to rainforest

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included

You’ll make your final descent through the rainforest to the Mweka Gate. Upon arrival, you’ll receive your summit certificates and then be transferred back to Arusha for a well-deserved rest.
