6 Days Trekking Machame Route
Route Overview
The Machame Route, known as the “Whiskey Route,” is one of the most popular and scenic routes to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. It offers a challenging yet rewarding trek with beautiful landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and fantastic views of Kilimanjaro’s two peaks. The Machame Route is ideal for those who want to experience a variety of terrains, from lush rainforests to alpine deserts, all while enjoying an optimal acclimatization profile. This 6-day itinerary allows you to ascend at a comfortable pace, increasing your chances of successfully reaching Uhuru Peak.
Full Itinerary
After breakfast at your hotel in Arusha, you will drive to Machame Gate. After registration at the gate, your trek will begin through the lush rainforest, where you will likely spot blue monkeys and various bird species. The trail can be muddy and slippery, so trekking poles are helpful. By late afternoon, you’ll reach Machame Camp, where you will have dinner and rest.
- Elevation: 1,800m to 3,010m
- Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
- Distance: 11 km
- Habitat: Rainforest
Meals: Lunch & Dinner included
Today, you’ll leave the rainforest behind and continue the ascent on a steeper path. The trail becomes rocky as you enter the moorland zone. The Shira Plateau offers breathtaking views of Kibo Peak. After a short rest and lunch break, you’ll continue to Shira Camp, where you will settle in for the night.
- Elevation: 3,010m to 3,845m
- Hiking Time: 4-6 hours
- Distance: 5 km
- Habitat: Moorland
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included
This is a crucial acclimatization day. You’ll hike to Lava Tower, an iconic rock formation that stands at 4,630m. The altitude will be noticeably higher, and some trekkers may begin to feel the effects. After lunch at Lava Tower, you’ll descend to Barranco Camp for the night. The descent helps your body adjust to the altitude, following the “climb high, sleep low” principle. Barranco Camp is set in a stunning valley, with views of the Great Barranco Wall.
- Elevation: 3,845m to 4,630m (Lava Tower), then descend to 3,960m
- Hiking Time: 6-7 hours
- Distance: 10 km
- Habitat: Alpine desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included
After breakfast, you’ll make your way to Barafu Camp, the final camp before the summit. The trail is a short but steep ascent, passing through the alpine desert. Once at Barafu, you’ll rest, prepare your gear, and have an early dinner in preparation for the midnight summit push. You’ll sleep early as the summit attempt begins at midnight.
- Elevation: 3,960m to 4,640m
- Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
- Distance: 4 km
- Habitat: Alpine desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included
At midnight, you’ll begin the final push to the summit. This section is the most physically and mentally challenging part of the trek. The trail is steep, with switchbacks leading up to Stella Point (5,739m), where you’ll take a short rest and witness the sunrise. From Stella Point, it’s a short but tough hike to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa! After celebrating your achievement, you’ll descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp for your final night on the mountain.
- Elevation: 4,640m to 5,895m (Uhuru Peak), then descend to 3,080m (Mweka Camp)
- Hiking Time: 7-8 hours ascent, 4-6 hours descent
- Distance: 5 km ascent, 12 km descent
- Habitat: Arctic zone to rainforest
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included
A gentle trek takes us down through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where we complete park formalities and receive certificates, which you can hang up with pride! We are then met by our vehicles and return to the hotel in Arusha, where you can treat yourself to a welcome hot shower.

VerifiedWOW! Outstanding! My husband & i have recently retuned from a trip of a life time! Benjemin was exceptional. Extremely knowledgable & informative! We learnt so much . Always very friendly , smiley & professional. He made sure we saw & experienced all that one expects from a safari experience. The whole safari was faultless & truly magical. Once in a life time experience. I have to stress that Benjemin was an extremely diligent &careful driver which was very reassuring for us considering how bumpy the roads were & having seen a lot of jeeps broken down. Our jeep was super clean & comfortable & Benjemin always made sure we had everything we needed. All in all i would not hesitate to book again with Benjemin. Thank you for making our trip unforgettable!chanas_112024-10-30VerifiedGreat and Amazing Experiences It was a great experience, starting with communication before the trip until the end of the trip. Spending a full week with him, we were afraid it would be awkward, but he is so nice and so much fun. He told us many intersting facts about animals and Tanzania, taught us the Jambo Song, he is very experienced in game drive, knows the roads within the parks as the palm of his hand and has such a natural talent for spotting animals. Thank you so much for everything, we hope to be back some day.. Tanzania peace and love!!Gabymol2024-10-14VerifiedAmazing experience with Loren African Safaris We booked 4 days Serengiti and Ngorongoro crater tour with Loren African Safaris. If anyone is visiting Tanzania, you can surely book with Mr Loren. We had a great tour with them, they catered to all our requests including our rescheduling of the whole package. Our tour operator was not only prompt, also he understood exactly what we wanted and created a customize package for Serengiti in our budget. We would highly recommend them for their outstanding services.shipra Thakur2024-09-21VerifiedIncredible Safari experience We had an incredible safari experience with our guide, Benjamin. His friendly demeanor and expert guidance made the safari truly unforgettable. Highly recommended!Dalila Q2024-08-28VerifiedWe had a great experience We are just back after four days of safari and we are really happy. We saw a lot of animals and got memories for life. We are really happy with our great and very kind guide and driver Patience who did everything so we would feel comfortable and happy. He drove very good and safe and told us a lot about the animals. The safari lodges were very good and we had really good food all these days. We had warm food for lunch and not just a lunch package. One of us is allergic to gluten and the company really took this seriously and delivered good food that felt safe to eat. The owner of the company always replied very quick on what’s app both before and during the safari and really cared about that we would have the best experience. I would really recommend this company to anyone wishing to go on safari in Tanzania. Asante sana!josefinhenrysson2024-08-17VerifiedA fabulous tour which has us itching to return. We researched a number of tour operators when booking our private safari tour + holiday to Zanzibar. And got several quotes. We had never heard of Loren, but their pricing was attractive and they are clearly listed on the Tanzanian government's website of licensed tour operators. We paid a deposit by transfer using a website called PesaPal, with the remainder given in cash (USD) on arrival. From then on our accommodation, all transfers and internal flight was covered. Our guide stayed with us for the length of the tour and was a huge help in getting us where we needed to go, identifying species and keeping us very well fed.Following an unforgettable safari, we spent a few days in Zanzibar in lovely surroundings and accommodation.I'd recommend this company to anyone considering a Tanzanian holiday; your money will stay in Tanzania and not be sent off to some international tour operator, and the team will make sure that you are very well looked after. We already want to book a return holiday in future, and will be looking at Loren again when we do.phenomenonx2024-07-29VerifiedUnforgettable memories We did a one day safari trip with Loren from Zanzibar and it was nothing short of amazing. Loren made this a smooth trip. Throughout the entire process, Loren was respectful. Our driver Samson was very outgoing, funny and knowledgeable. Samson made this trip feel like 10 minutes. We recommend Loren due to his professionalism and knowledge of the culture/safari.Vamougne K2024-07-13Verified14-day tour (hiking + safari) with Loren African Safari We had a 14-day tour (hiking + safari) with Loren African Safari and were really impressed with the guide Benjamin. He had a good sense of what we really wanted and organised everything for us. At the beginning we were a bit hesitant because there weren't that many reviews yet. But he was able to defuse this wonderfully by finding a reference with whom we could find out about his trip with Loren African Safari. He is a careful driver and doesn't speed. He has very keen eyes on safari and knows the flora and fauna inside out. He was always very quick to respond to questions or requests before and during the trip. And also important for us: many companies look as if they come from Tanzania, but in the end they belong to foreigners. Loren African Safari is 100% Tanzanian! Jana & Matthias from Switzerland can definitely recommend it!Hakuna Matata & Piece and Love :-)Matthias2024-07-08Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust.
