The Rongai Route offers a remote and quieter approach to Mount Kilimanjaro, starting near the Kenyan border and showcasing breathtaking landscapes. This northern route provides spectacular views, a gradual ascent, and fewer crowds, making it an ideal choice for trekkers seeking a unique experience.

Full Itinerary

After breakfast, depart from Moshi and drive to the Rongai Gate near the Kenyan border. After registration, you will begin your trek through lush rainforest. The path gradually ascends to Simba Camp, your first campsite, where you’ll enjoy dinner and overnight.

The trail continues to gradually climb as you make your way to Kikelewa Camp. Along the way, you will enjoy panoramic views of the vast wilderness and impressive landscapes. The campsite is nestled near Kikelewa Caves, offering a serene environment for the night.

After breakfast, you begin a steep ascent toward Mawenzi Tarn, a campsite located beneath the imposing Mawenzi Peak. This day’s trek is shorter but the altitude gain will start to be felt. Spend the afternoon relaxing or exploring the surrounding area to aid acclimatization.

  • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
  • Distance: 7km
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

Cross the lunar-like landscape of the Saddle, which lies between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. You will arrive at Kibo Hut in the early afternoon and rest before your summit attempt. Eat an early dinner and try to get some sleep as your summit push begins at midnight.

  • Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
  • Distance: 8km
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

Around midnight, start your final ascent to Uhuru Peak. The climb is steep and strenuous as you traverse the scree slopes toward Gilman’s Point on the crater rim. From Gilman’s, continue on to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating your achievement, descend to Kibo Hut for a short rest and then continue to Horombo Hut for the night.

  • Elevation: 4,700m to 5,895m (Uhuru Peak), descent to 3,720m
  • Hiking Time: 6-8 hours ascent, 6-7 hours descent
  • Distance: 18km total
  • Habitat: Arctic to Alpine Desert

After breakfast, trek through moorland and lush rainforest as you make your way to the Marangu Gate. Upon arrival, you’ll sign out, receive your certificate, and transfer back to Arusha for a well-deserved rest at your hotel.

  • Distance: 20km
  • Habitat: Moorland to Montane Forest
